FOLK running across desktop, mobile and the browser

Get FOLK

FOLK is free, and it runs everywhere. The browser is the whole game - the apps below are the same world in a window of its own.

Browser

This is the one to start with. There is no installer, no account setup beyond signing in, and no waiting - the world loads in a tab and your progress is saved to your account, so you can pick it up from any other device later.

Mobile

FOLK plays on phones and tablets through the same browser build, so there is nothing to install there either. Adding it to your home screen gives you an icon and a fullscreen window without the browser bars, which is the closest thing to a native app until the Android build lands.

Desktop

The desktop apps are a thin shell around the same hosted game, which has two useful consequences: they are tiny, and they never need updating, because the world they load is always the current one. What you get over a browser tab is a dock or taskbar icon, a window of its own, and no address bar in the way.

Installation instructions

The builds are not code-signed, so your operating system may show a scary warning the first time you open one. The app is safe - here is how to get past it on each platform.

Windows

Run the installer. If SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway.

macOS

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Folk into Applications.
  2. The first launch will be blocked, because the app is not notarized by Apple. Try to open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
  3. If it still refuses with “Folk is damaged and can’t be opened”, run this once in Terminal and then open it normally:
    xattr -cr /Applications/Folk.app

Linux

AppImage:

chmod +x folk-latest-amd64.AppImage && ./folk-latest-amd64.AppImage

Debian package:

sudo apt install ./folk-latest-amd64.deb
