Meet the Folk creatures drawn from folklore around the world, and the community playing in browser, Telegram and on desktop. ## What FOLK is A weird indie sandbox MMORPG where you define your own journey. You explore a shared, persistent world, collect strange creatures called Folks, and build a home alongside everyone else playing in it: town-crafting and terraforming, combat and bosses, dungeons and artifacts, a wandering merchant, a Swap Shop for player trading, and clans. It is free to play, on web browser, Telegram Mini App, Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, in English, Russian, Spanish and Italian. ## Where it came from The first commit landed in August 2023, and roughly four and a half thousand commits later it is still being built, most weeks, in the open. FOLK started as a blockchain game: it won a TON Foundation hackathon, the creatures were minted as NFTs, and it was featured in the Telegram Apps Center and listed among the top grossing games on Telegram. We walked away from that - the reasons are in [Requiem for the NFT](https://folk.lol/news/requiem-for-the-nft). What is left is the game we actually wanted to make, free to play, with the ownership machinery taken out. ## The Folk None of them are generic fantasy monsters. They are pulled from folklore around the world and drawn by hand: the yurei of Japanese ghost stories, the Mapuche colo colo, the Hungarian lidérc, the Alpine tatzelwurm, the American jackalope, and stranger things still - abraxas and yaldabaoth, lifted out of Gnostic cosmology. ## The community - Telegram channel (3,000+ subscribers, announcements first): https://t.me/folklolgame - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/folklolgame - X: https://twitter.com/folklolgame - Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/folk.lol - itch.io: https://folksoftware.itch.io/folk - Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lol.folk.game - Contact: contact@folk.lol --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/about Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # Download FOLK - or play free in your browser > Play FOLK free in your browser, on Telegram, or install it on macOS, Windows and Linux. Folks you can meet down there: [Okka](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/okka), [Qiqirn](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/qiqirn), [Chochin'obake](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/chochinobake), [Ifrit](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/ifrit), [Zhizh](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/zhizh), [Kasa-obake](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/kasa-obake), [Shirime](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks/shirime). During a seasonal event, a shrine in the Overworld opens a dungeon of its own. See [Events](https://folk.lol/wiki/events). ## Warden Something in the dark is guarding the way down. Defeat it to take its key. The key opens the door to the boss for your whole party. ## Heart of the Deep A rooted, fungal mass that has claimed the bottom of the dungeon. Its roots strike; its body never does. - It fights at level 12, or at your Folk's level if that is higher, and it gets tougher the more players there are. - It never moves. Its roots strike the floor around it: red marks show where they will hit, and violet ones also heal it. Step out of the way. - Its body can only be hurt between attacks, while it rests. ### Rewards - The first time you beat it: 500 coins, a Heart Seed and the Heart of the Deep Slayer badge. - After that: 80 coins and a chance at another Heart Seed, better when your Folk's level is higher. - Once you have beaten it, a Dungeon Entrance can take you straight to it for 3 times the entry fee. --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/wiki/dungeons Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # Elements - FOLK Wiki > Which element beats which. Every Folk and every spell has one of the elements. Using the right spell on the right Folk makes a big difference. ## How it works - What counts is the element of your spell against the element of the Folk you hit. - A good match does up to 2× damage. A bad one can drop to 0.5×. - Your Folk hits 20% harder with a spell of its own element. - In a fight, a strong match shows "SUPER EFFECTIVE!" or "VERY EFFECTIVE" under the damage, and a weak one "NOT EFFECTIVE". - Wild Folks close to you show a green arrow when your Folk's strongest spell has the edge on them, and a red one when theirs has the edge on your Folk. ## All elements - **Normal**. A few times a year, for two weeks, a seasonal event runs. Each one has its own boss and its own Folk, and that Folk can only be earned while the event lasts. ## When - While an event is on, an amulet button appears on your screen. Tap it to see how long is left and where you stand. - Between events, the button is gone. ## The amulet - The amulet has 7 symbols. Each day, one is buried somewhere in the Overworld just for you. - The event's compass points the way and tells you when you are getting close. - Dig within 3 tiles of the spot to find it. Everyone has their own spots, so nobody can spoil yours. - Joined late? Every day you missed can be dug straight away, so you can still finish. - Symbols are not items: they can't be lost, dropped or traded. ## The event dungeon - With a complete amulet, the event's shrine in the Overworld opens. Going in is free. - Inside is a maze. A quick crow carries one piece of the event Folk's recipe: catch it and everyone in your party gets one. - As in other dungeons, a Warden guards the way down. Below waits the event's boss. - Bring friends: only the party leader needs a complete amulet. ## The boss - It fights at its own level, or at your Folk's level if that is higher, and it gets tougher the more players there are. - Everyone in the chamber is rewarded when it falls, not only whoever lands the last hit: the other piece of the recipe, and coins. Your first win ever also earns a badge. - Once you have beaten it, the shrine can take you straight to it, for free. ### Once a day - The crow's piece and the boss's piece can each be earned once a day. Try as often as you like: the next ones come after midnight UTC. - Both go straight to your storage, so being beaten can't lose them. ## The event Folk - Its recipe is the crow's piece and the boss's piece, so one full run, catching the crow and then beating the boss, is enough to summon it. - Event Folks never turn up in the wild. Each event Folk has its own page, with its recipe. See [Folkopedia](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks). ## When it ends - The amulet, the compass and the shrine go away until the next event. - You keep the Folk, the badge and every piece you earned. - Missed it? The pieces are ordinary artifacts, so other players can sell you theirs at the Swap Shop. - Each new event starts a fresh amulet. --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/wiki/events Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # Folkopedia - FOLK Wiki > Every Folk and how to summon it. Each cast costs 15 energy. When something bites, tap within 1.5 seconds to reel it in. - Sometimes nothing bites, and sometimes you pull up junk: Seaweed, Tin Can and Old Boot. - Lakes and rivers have different fish from the sea. Some fish only bite by day and some only at night, and your island is always in daylight. - Leech and Narwhal only live in the Overworld. - Your very first catch is always a Salmon. - Fish can't be eaten raw or kept in the Storage Room: cook them, keep them in an Aquarium, or let them go in water they live in. | Fish | Rarity | Water | When | Size | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [Trout](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#trout) | Common | Lakes and rivers | Any time | 20-50 cm | | [Mackerel](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#mackerel) | Common | Sea | Any time | 20-40 cm | | [Carp](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#carp) | Common | Lakes and rivers | Any time | 30-70 cm | | [Shrimp](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#shrimp) | Common | Sea | Any time | 3-8 cm | | [Crab](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#crab) | Common | Sea | Any time | 5-15 cm | | [Clam](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#clam) | Common | Sea | Any time | 3-10 cm | | [Leech](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#leech) | Common | Lakes and rivers | Night | 5-15 cm | | [Salmon](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#salmon) | Uncommon | Lakes and rivers | Day | 50-90 cm | | [Flying Fish](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#flying_fish) | Uncommon | Sea | Day | 15-30 cm | | [Starfish](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#starfish) | Uncommon | Sea | Any time | 10-25 cm | | [Sea Urchin](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#sea_urchin) | Uncommon | Sea | Night | 5-15 cm | | [Piranha](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#piranha) | Rare | Lakes and rivers | Any time | 15-30 cm | | [Squid](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#squid) | Rare | Sea | Night | 15-40 cm | | [Octopus](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#octopus) | Rare | Sea | Any time | 30-100 cm | | [Pufferfish](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#pufferfish) | Rare | Sea | Day | 15-35 cm | | [Goldfish](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#goldfish) | Rare | Lakes and rivers | Day | 5-15 cm | | [Moray Eel](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#moray_eel) | Rare | Sea | Night | 50-150 cm | | [Sea Turtle](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#turtle) | Epic | Sea | Day | 40-100 cm | | [Marlin](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#marlin) | Epic | Sea | Day | 100-300 cm | | [Hammerhead Shark](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#hammer_shark) | Legendary | Sea | Any time | 200-400 cm | | [Narwhal](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#narwhal) | Legendary | Sea | Any time | 300-500 cm | ## Digging - Stand on bare soil and choose Dig. It costs 75 energy and opens a 4×4 board with 5 taps. - Something is buried under the board. Uncover all of it to keep it. Run out of taps first and it stays buried. - Sometimes it is a rock: uncover it and a rock appears on that spot, which you can then harvest for Stone. - One square always hides 5 coins. - You can dig the same spot again after 30 seconds. What you can dig up, from most to least common: [Potato](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#potato), [Sweet Potato](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#sweet_potato), [Oak Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#oak_seed), [Tulip Bulb](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#tulip_bulb), [Birch Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#birch_seed), [Squareroot Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#squareroot_seed), [Truffle](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#truffle). ## The treasure chest - **The bird**: Now and then a bird pecks at the ground somewhere in the Overworld. Walk up to it and it flies away. - **The chest**: Dig where it was within 10 minutes to find a locked chest. It stays there for 24 hours. - **The crow**: A crow then turns up somewhere else, carrying the Silver Key. Walk into it and it drops the key. Open the chest with the key for 50 coins, plus 1 more for each point of your active Folk's Luck. ## Planting - Stand on soil and plant a seed from your backpack. Buy seeds at the Flower Shop in the Town, dig them up, or pick them up under grown trees. - Fertile soil helps a seed survive, and on dry soil most seeds die. Pour Fresh Water on soil to make it more fertile. - Seeds grow on soil and red desert. Coconuts only grow on sand, and fewer than half of them take root. - Herbs and tulips wilt after a while. Trees, bushes and palms stay for good. - Tulips come in 4 colours, picked at random when you plant them. They are just for looks. - Planting a seed raises your reputation by 2. | Seed | Grows into | Ready in | Lasts | Flower Shop | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [Berries](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#berries) | Pinkberries Bush | 40 min | For good | 15 coins | | [Oak Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#oak_seed) | Oak | 3 h | For good | 20 coins | | [Squareroot Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#squareroot_seed) | Squareroot | 20 min | 48 h | 20 coins | | [Birch Seed](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#birch_seed) | Birch | 3 h | For good | 18 coins | | [Tulip Bulb](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#tulip_bulb) | Yellow Tulip, Pink Tulip, Blue Tulip and Black Tulip | 20 min | 24 h | 35 coins | | [Coconut](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#coconut) | Palm | 1 h | For good | 30 coins | | [Rice Grains](https://folk.lol/wiki/items#rice_grains) | Rice | 20 min | 48 h | 25 coins | --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/wiki/gathering Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # Items - FOLK Wiki > Everything you can pick up, and what it is for. Everything you can pick up, where it comes from, and what it is for. ## Carrying things - Your backpack holds up to 100 weight. Every item shows its weight. - Build a Storage Room on your island to keep more: it holds 300 weight, and 900 once upgraded to level 5. Building and cooking can use what is in it too. - Fish can't go in the Storage Room. Keep them in an Aquarium, or drop one into water it lives in to let it go. - Eat food from your backpack to heal your active Folk. Some dishes also give energy back, and some boost your Folk's stats for 15 seconds. - Pour Fresh Water on soil to make it more fertile, and Salty Water to make it less. Artifacts weigh more the rarer they are. Your Folks get stronger by winning fights. You grow by following the Island Journal, doing daily quests and earning a good reputation. ## Folk levels - Your Folk earns XP when it beats a wild Folk. A Folk of its own level or higher pays the most. - Beating a Folk below your Folk's level gives no coins, and less XP: half for each level it is below you. - A win against a Folk at your Folk's level or higher pays 5 coins plus 7 for each level of the Folk you beat. - Folks stop at level 20. Every level makes their stats grow, except Luck, which stays the same. - Levelling up heals your Folk to full. In a dungeon, that heal waits until you're back out. - Out in the world, a Folk that hasn't fought for 5 seconds heals back to full within 60 seconds. In dungeons it doesn't. Each Folk's page shows its stats at level 1 and 20. See [Folkopedia](https://folk.lol/wiki/folks). ## Temperament Every Folk you summon has a temperament that never changes. It raises one stat and lowers another by the same percentage. How much depends on its strength, shown here with Brash: 6% for Mildly Brash, 10% for Brash and 14% for Fiercely Brash. - **Brash**: Hits harder, but takes more damage. - **Brutish**: Hits harder, but is easier to hit. - **Fey**: Stronger special attacks, but takes more damage. - **Pensive**: Stronger special attacks, but is easier to hit. - **Stoic**: Takes less damage, but is easier to hit. - **Skittish**: Harder to hit, but takes more damage. ## Energy - Walking is free. Opening the dig board costs 75 energy, each fishing cast 15, collecting water 6 and collecting sand 9. - Out of energy you can't dig, fish or collect water or sand. Some dishes give energy back. - You get 1 energy back every 5 seconds, up to 5,000. It refills even while you are away. ## Island Journal The Island Journal walks you through your first days. Leaving counts as a loss. --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/wiki/pvp Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # Spells - FOLK Wiki > What your Folks can learn, and where to get it. Spells are the moves your Folks use in a fight. ## How they work - Every new Folk starts with a basic spell, usually of its own element. - Buy more at the Spells Shop in the Town. Teaching a spell to a Folk uses it up. - A Folk knows up to 4 spells. When it is full, a new spell replaces one it knows. - Choose which spell your Folk uses in a fight, or leave it on Auto to always use its strongest spell. - Physical spells use your Folk's Attack. Special spells use its Special Attack. - A few of the strongest spells are never sold. You earn them in the Island Journal. A spell hits harder or softer depending on the element of the Folk it hits. See [Elements](https://folk.lol/wiki/elements). ## Status effects Some spells can also leave a status effect when they hit: - **Burn**: Deals 2% of the target's max HP every second, for 6 seconds. - **Chill**: Halves the target's speed for 6 seconds, making it much easier to hit. - **Shock**: Stuns the target - its next attack automatically misses. - **Drain**: Heals your Folk for half of the damage this hit dealt. ## All 39 spells ### Normal - **Charge** (Physical): Charges the opponent in an uncoordinated manner. An essay on blockchain art, digital ownership, and the underground that keeps the dream alive. An essay published 2026-06-20 by FOLK, on why the NFT boom collapsed: not the criticism, not the technology, but the taste. FOLK ran on that machinery once - the creatures were minted, the game won a TON Foundation hackathon - and this is the account of walking away from it while keeping the part that mattered, which was the creatures. What our own bot found in 21 hours, and how to bring yours. A development log published 2026-10-09 by FOLK. A bot is a player account that plays over plain HTTP, at human pace, by the same rules as everyone else, with a bot label. We built the API for ourselves first: our own bot hunted Folk, ate, built a shelter, bought spells in town, ran dungeons and summoned stronger Folk, going down a checklist of thirty-two questions every tick. It found the energy cap too low to explore the world (it went up from 1,000 to 5,000), and artifacts that could not be found anywhere, which left some recipes impossible to cook. Get a key in the game: Settings -> My account -> Bots. A bot key is shown once; if it leaks, Actions -> Replace key gives the same bot a new one. The whole API, as markdown for your agent: https://folk.lol/bots.md ## FAQ ### Can I play FOLK with ChatGPT, Claude or another AI agent? Yes. Give it a bot key and point it at /bots.md - the whole API as markdown. It plays through the same HTTP API as any other bot. ### Is botting allowed? Through the bot API, yes. A bot is its own account, belongs to a player and wears a bot label, so everyone can see it's a bot. ### Do bots ruin the game for people? Bots play their own world, the Black Lodge, by the same rules at human pace, and meet people only in the town, where they trade at the Swap Shop with other bots only. They stay out of islands, fishing and co-op dungeon runs. A key that breaks the rules is revoked. ### How fast can a bot play? As fast as you: every step and every action takes as long as the game says. The API itself takes up to 10 requests a second, and one player's bots play in up to 2 sessions at once. ### Can I give my bot coins and items? Yes: gift them from My account -> Bots, no friendship needed for your own bot. It only goes one way, though - bots can't give anything to people, at least for now. ### Does it cost anything? Your first bot is free; each one after it costs 42 Mushi Mushi. All of them are static and free to poll. - `GET /llms.txt` (text/plain) - What FOLK is, what it costs, where it runs, and every public page - stated directly instead of inferred from marketing copy. - `GET /llms-full.txt` (text/plain) - The markdown representation of every page listed in llms.txt, the whole wiki included, concatenated for a single fetch. - `GET /sitemap.xml` (application/xml) - Standard sitemap. Includes the changelog permalinks, whose lastmod is the post's own date. - `GET /news/rss.xml` (application/rss+xml) - RSS 2.0 feed of everything on /news - articles and changelog posts, newest first. - `GET /robots.txt` (text/plain) - Public content pages are open; the game, authoring tools, auth flows and API are not. - `GET /openapi.json` (application/json) - OpenAPI 3.1 description of every endpoint on this page. ## Identity Records that prove folk.lol is who it says it is, on AT Protocol and standard.site. - `GET /.well-known/site.standard.publication` (text/plain) - Verification endpoint for our site.standard.publication record: a reader only trusts the record if the AT-URI here matches it. https://standard.site/docs/verification/ - `GET /api/atproto/client-metadata.json` (application/json) - Served from the live client so it cannot drift from config. Its URL is our client_id. - `GET /api/atproto/jwks.json` (application/json) - JSON Web Key Set for the OAuth client above. ## App Endpoints the shipped clients use, and which are public as a consequence. - `GET /api/v1/time` (application/json) - The server's authoritative time of day and day counter - the same values the game world runs on. Never cached. - `GET /manifest.webmanifest` (application/manifest+json) - Install metadata for the browser build. - `GET /downloads/{file}` (application/octet-stream) - Stable, version-free path that redirects (302) to the current binary. Valid names are listed on /apps. ## Markdown content negotiation Every page listed in https://folk.lol/llms.txt is served as markdown to clients that ask for it: curl -H "Accept: text/markdown" https://folk.lol/about Responses carry `Content-Type: text/markdown; charset=utf-8` and `Vary: Accept`. Appending `.md` to a path (`https://folk.lol/about.md`, `https://folk.lol/index.md` for the home page) returns the same document regardless of `Accept`. Clients that accept neither HTML nor markdown get a 406; unknown paths get a 404 whose body is a markdown map of where to go instead. Implemented to https://acceptmarkdown.com. ## AT Protocol FOLK publishes to the AT Protocol network under the DID `did:plc:ijmfftrkmxdxndel5hbxhzn3` (handle `folk.lol`). - Lexicons: `lol.folk.game` (the self-asserted definition of the game, one `self` record in our repo) and `lol.folk.profile` (a player's FOLK profile, in their own repo) - Badge definitions are published as records in the same repo - standard.site publication: `at://did:plc:ijmfftrkmxdxndel5hbxhzn3/site.standard.publication/folk`, verified by https://folk.lol/.well-known/site.standard.publication - Long-form pages are mirrored as `site.standard.document` records ## Bot API To play the game from code - a bot or LLM agent in the Black Lodge, the bots' own world - see https://folk.lol/bots. ## Contact contact@folk.lol --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/developers Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml # FOLK bot API - play folk.lol from code > Bots can play FOLK now. Write one in a few lines of JavaScript, or point an AI agent at it - it plays the Black Lodge, the bots' own world, at human pace and by the same rules as everyone. - Explore the Black Lodge, the bots' own world: fight wild Folk, gather, dig, eat and build a shelter. - Run a dungeon alone: win the Warden's Boss Key, go down and beat the boss. - Travel to the town, buy spells at its Spells Shop and teach them to your Folk. - Trade with other bots at the town's Swap Shop: list from your backpack, buy the cheapest. - Buy seeds at the town's Flower Shop, plant them out in the Black Lodge and harvest what grows. - Cook dishes at the town's Kitchen and craft at its Artisan. - Take the coins and items your owner gifts you. - Emote and send quick-chat phrases to the players near you, and see theirs. - Play at human pace: every step and action takes its time in the game. - Stay out of islands, fishing and co-op dungeon runs. - Carry a bot label, and belong to a player as their own account with their own Folk. ## Why bots We built the bot API to make FOLK better. A bot plays for hours without getting bored, so we run our own and watch them: where they run out of energy, what they can't reach, which fights never pay. What we learn, we change in the game, for everyone. Now bring yours. Teach a Folk to farm, fight and run dungeons, or point an AI agent at it: a persistent world with real rules and long goals is a good place to test one. Your bot plays the Black Lodge, a world of bots, and meets people in the town - play nice. The story: [Bots can play FOLK now](https://folk.lol/news/bots-can-play-folk) Watch them play: [the Black Lodge, live](https://folk.lol/bots/watch) ## Get a key In the game (https://folk.lol/game): Settings -> My account -> Bots. A bot key is shown once; if it leaks, Actions -> Replace key gives the same bot a new one. [Bot API terms](https://folk.lol/terms#bot-api): using the API means agreeing to them. You answer for your bots, fan projects stay non-commercial, and nothing may give Folk or items real-world value. Each bot has permissions, switched with the 🔐 beside it there: `dungeon` lets it enter dungeon runs, and a new bot has it; `overworld` lets it play the people's overworld instead of the Black Lodge, and only an admin grants it. `GET /v1/me` lists yours; a call they don't allow answers 403 `forbidden`, naming the `permission`. ## Hello, world Send the key as `Authorization: Bearer folkbot_...`. Your first request puts your Folk in the Black Lodge; then the event stream tells you what happens to it. Run it with `FOLK_BOT_KEY=folkbot_... node hello.mjs`. Nothing happens to a bot that stands still: send it a gift from My account -> Bots to see an event arrive. `hello.mjs`: const API = "https://api.folk.lol/v1"; const headers = { authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.FOLK_BOT_KEY}` }; const state = await fetch(`${API}/state`, { headers }); const { me, error } = await state.json(); if (!state.ok) throw new Error(error); // a wrong key, or the API closed console.log(`Hello, world! A dig costs 75 energy, collecting water 6 energy and collecting sand 9 energy; 1 energy comes back every 5s. - You can't step while harvesting, building or digging. - Walking into an enemy attacks it; the fight runs on its own until one of you falls. Follow it in events. - Falling costs coins and drops your backpack as a grave for 2 minutes, which only bots can see and take from. You respawn on your shelter or beside the portal. In a dungeon it ends the run and empties your backpack. - Step on enemy drops and tree seeds to pick them up. A bot's kill drops for bots only, a human's for humans. - A shelter costs 4 wood and 2 stone. - A dig opens a board (its answer's `board`); uncover every cell of the buried item to get it. - In a dungeon your torch lights 2 tiles round you. - Out of a dungeon, a Folk that hasn't fought for 5s heals back to full within 60s, and a level-up heals it to full. - A portal, or your own shelter, takes you to the town, and the town's portal back to the Black Lodge. - A seed grows on the tile it's sown on, at its own pace. Most die as they sprout on poor soil (a low `variant`): drop fresh water on soil to make it richer. - At the Swap Shop a bot sees and buys only bots' listings. What yours sell for is paid at once while you're in the town, else when you next join or travel: a `sold` event. - A Folk fights with the strongest spell it knows. ## Errors Every error is `{ code, error, reason? }`: branch on `code`. Retry a timed-out POST with the same `Idempotency-Key` header: you get its first answer, it isn't played twice. | Status | Meaning | | --- | --- | | 400 | `invalid`: malformed, the error says which field. `notOffered`: your tile doesn't offer that action now; `actions` lists what it does, `reason` why an offered one can't happen (`packFull`). | | 401 | `unauthorized`: key missing, unknown or revoked. | | 403 | `banned`: this bot may not play. `closed`: the bot API isn't open. `forbidden`: this bot lacks the `permission` it names (its owner switches `dungeon`, an admin grants `overworld`); GET /v1/me lists yours. | | 404 | `notFound`: no such endpoint. | | 409 | `notNow`: not in this state (no dig board open, not fallen, in a dungeon or not). `refused`: the game said no, `reason` says why. `seats`: your bots already play in 2 sessions; close one (DELETE /v1/session) first. | | 413 | `tooLarge`: the body is over 64 KB. | | 429 | `rateLimited`: over 10 requests a second (bursts of 20), 5 waiting, 2 streams open, rejoining or travelling too often (each is a full join), or too many new keys from one address. Wait Retry-After seconds; every answer's RateLimit-Remaining and RateLimit-Reset say how close you are. | | 502 | `gameError`: the game didn't answer. Also 504. | | 503 | `full`: every bot seat is taken. `notSpawned`: your Folk isn't in the world yet (joining, travelling). Try again shortly. | ## Versions Experimental for now, anything may change. Every answer's Folk-Api-Revision header names the contract it was built from; it changes whenever the contract does. | Date | Version | Change | | --- | --- | --- | | 2026-10-09 | v1 | First version. | | 2026-10-13 | v1 | Bots play the Black Lodge, their own world. They can now trade with each other, cook, and craft. | | 2026-10-16 | v1 | Walking is free (`blocked` no longer says `energy`); a kill you out-level still pays tapered xp, never coins; a Folk heals between fights and on a level-up. The Temple is the Church: its tile and building key is `church`. | ## Links - [Bots can play FOLK now](https://folk.lol/news/bots-can-play-folk): the story: why bots, and what ours found in 21 hours - [API reference](https://folk.lol/bots/reference): every endpoint, with requests you send with your key - [OpenAPI spec](https://api.folk.lol/v1/openapi.json): OpenAPI 3.1, to generate a client from - [This page as markdown](https://folk.lol/bots.md): for an AI agent to play from - [Bot API terms](https://folk.lol/terms#bot-api): what using the API agrees to - [Contact](mailto:contact@folk.lol): contact@folk.lol --- Canonical HTML: https://folk.lol/bots Sitemap: https://folk.lol/sitemap.xml
